Our newsletters are mostly guiding you on different directions and ideas on how to improve your style and wardrobe. But every so often we think it’s important to address what you shouldn’t do. While this isn’t a complete list of all the things you shouldn’t wear, we think they’re some of the most important ones.
Don’t Wear Ill-fitting Clothes
This should go without saying. But as we stressed previously, this is one of the most important and entirely too often overlooked aspects of choosing clothes. While we don’t expect you to change this overnight, we hope that as you start introducing more fitted items into your style rotation, you’ll look back one day and wonder why you ever wore those baggy clothes before.
Don't Wear Sweat Socks With Casual Shoes
Unless you’re wearing sneakers, you have no reason to be wearing sweat socks. There’s no better way to ruin your outfit than looking down and seeing sweat socks (of any color) paired with your shoes. Especially sandals. If you find yourself in this boat, go to your nearest Target (or any other department store) and pick up a pack of dress or casual socks.
Don’t Mix Too Many Colors
We are big fans of introducing color into our wardrobe. Nothing makes you stand out better than a pop of red or a splash of yellow. But with that comes a little responsibility – while you want to show that your color palette has range, you don’t want to look like a walking box of Lucky Charms. You want your colors (2-3 tops) to be working together as one, not every color competing against each other. If you’re ever in doubt as to whether your outfit has too many colors, then scale a color or two back. Better safe than sorry.
Don’t Wear Dress Shirts Untucked
It’s important to learn the difference between dress shirts and casual shirts. The biggest being that dress shirts are longer and look really bad untucked. They’re made to be tucked in. Casual shirts are cut shorter and should fall around mid-zipper. If you’re going to wear a dress shirt, tuck it in.
Don’t Wear Wrinkled Clothes
While this seems like a no-brainer, you’d be amazed at how many men we see walking around dressed like their clothes came straight out of a laundry basket. Don’t be that guy. It looks terrible and immature. Spend a few bucks on a decent iron and ironing board, and dress like an adult. Ironing can certainly be tedious, but it’s absolutely necessary evil. And if you don’t know how to iron, here is a quick primer on ironing.
Ditch Square Toed Shoes
For some reason, square toed shoes are still being sold in stores. If you’re one of the unlucky men that have a pair, it’s time to get rid of them. They were a very short lived trend that does not look good. Get yourself a normal looking pair of shoes that will outlive any trend phase.
